I am going to be in San Francisco for one night (2 days), what part of town should I stay in?

I would like to be able to walk around, good restaurants, maybe see a few sights, and generally get maximum benefit from a short trip. I would love to hear parts of town that you all like and a convenient hotel. I am planning to head north on 101 into Sonoma the next day if that makes a difference in terms of convenience. Thanks.I am going to be in San Francisco for one night (2 days), what part of town should I stay in?If you are only staying one night Union Square is the best place to stay. There are lots of good restaurants, shops, theaters and clubs in the Union Square area. It is centrally located with lots of public transportation options and within walking distance of most of the tourist areas.

Driving in the city can be confusing for visitors and parking is difficult and expensive anyplace downtown.

Joie de Vivre http://www.jdvhotels.com has several hotels in the Union Square area in different price points. Each hotel is unique, my favorite JdV hotel in Union Square are Hotel Rex and the Galleria Park.

And for some great ideas of things to do check out these websites:

I would stay at a place on/near the Wharf as there is so much to do there. We stayed at a Holiday Inn which is 2 blocks or so from the water and within walking distance of lots of attractions. There are several hotels/motels just a block or so from the waterfront no too expensive either. Be sure to stop at the Buena Vista restaurant/bar at the end of the Hyde St. trolley car turnaround. They have the best Irish coffees and great food reasonably priced. The view of the bay is perfect and there are many shops, street vendors, etc., in the area. Another fine restaurant is the Franciscan also on the waterfront with spectacular views of the golden gate bridge, alcatraz, etc.I am going to be in San Francisco for one night (2 days), what part of town should I stay in?Union square for sure....but be ready to pay hella $$
